Which method do you think is more successful when building a business - to promote the product you are trying to sell, or to promote the benefits of the product and what a person will achieve by purchasing it?

If you chose the second option, you are correct. Nobody buys a cleaning product because they like the name or the packaging. They like the cleaning product because of the results it gives. Example: An eco-friendly dishwashing detergent. People don't buy it for the name, or the packaging. They will buy this product because it cleans the dirty plates in their dishwasher, it doesn't leave spots on their glasses or flatware, and it doesn't fill the air in their home with harmful chemicals. Now THOSE are reasons to buy that product.

So, how do you apply this principle in your network marketing business? Well, first you have to realize that what you're selling is not the product, the business opportunity or the compensation plan.

I bet you are baffled by that last statement. I can almost hear the thoughts in your head - what else is there to sell? That's what network marketing is!

EXACTLY.

EVERYONE in network marketing is trying to sell the EXACT same thing - a fantastic product, the business opportunity of a lifetime, a compensation plan that is the best in the business. So, how do you separate yourself from the masses, stand out from the crowd, and position yourself as a leader in the network marketing industry?

You sell YOURSELF.

"Come again, Denise?" You think to yourself.

That's right. YOU SELL YOURSELF.

What does everyone really want in this business? Well, think about why you joined. Did you love the product? No, I bet it was more like you wanted to make money. You wanted to work from home. You wanted to be your own boss. You wanted to set your own hours.

So, how do you help someone achieve those goals? By helping someone solve a problem (make more money) or reach a goal (become self-employed). By letting them know you know how to do that for them. By letting them know how to build this business, and that you will help them every step of the way. You do NOT talk about your own business. You talk about network marketing in general and what it REALLY takes to succeed.

For the people who have never been a part of this industry before, this is extremely important. You cannot sign people up under you in your business and then leave them on their own to figure out how to be successful. You must train and mentor them. These people, who have been left to fend for themselves in this business, are the reason the failure rate is so high in network marketing and also why the reputation of the business has been so sullied.

For the people who are already in network marketing and are failing because nobody is training and mentoring them, you must become that expert for them. Teach them what YOU know about how to be successful. Let them apply it to their own business. The added benefit of this is, once your new protégés realize you know what you are doing, the transition for them to join you in your business is much easier.

How do you become the expert and a leader? Hopefully what I am teaching you with my articles and blog posts are helping. Look for and learn from other teachings on promoting network marketing properly and in a respectable business manner in addition to my own material. Taking Your MLM Business Online

You've probably heard the saying "the more things change the more they stay the same". I entered the game (network marketing) just as the internet was ramping up, about the same time you didn't need to be a bodybuilder to hold a cell phone to your ear (remember the bricks of past years?). We were essentially told to write that proverbial names list (you've heard it - by 21 you know 2000 people... ) and start calling - did that ever work?

Not knowing much about the industry we simply used the products we purchased monthly and attended every training we could. We were lucky, we benefited from the products our company of choice produced so personal consumption was never an issue.

Like so many people we got no's pretty well everywhere we turned but with sheer persistence eventually found and trained some great people and our business took off.

Fast forward 10 years it's time to bring our MLM business online - why you may ask. Simple, while the essence of network marketing is the same, marketing methods evolve and change over time. One of the hallmarks of the 21st century is "You Inc", or personal branding.

Thanks to the internet I've developed what I call a hybrid model, using the best offline MLM business strategies with online strategies. This means real approaches where I can send people to a web based presentation or do a one on one presentation if local, and attraction marketing through social media and content marketing to extend my reach.

Online is definitely a learned skill which for me at least has and is taking time but is absolutely worth it. "Brand you" will get you so far offline, and we have built teams in numerous countries just to prove the point, but online you're only limited by your belief in yourself and the effort you put in.

Key lessons from my journey so far:

  • Pick the right guru (s) to follow

  • Throw some money at quality training, it speeds up the learning curve enormously

  • Invest in personal growth on a daily basis. Network marketing / internet marketing is often called a personal growth course wrapped in a compensation plan - your income grows as you grow

  • Have an advertising budget

  • Find your voice - don't give your voice to someone else. Sure you can outsource your content (assuming content marketing is part of your strategy) to oDesk and the like, but rolling up your sleeves and creating your own content gives you authenticity

  • Be patient - it takes time but it does take

  • Have a daily plan of action - social marketing can drain your time. Never forget it's only part of the answer, you still need to daily prospect

  • Find a company to align yourself with that supports online marketing as part of the mix

  • Don't be afraid to look outside your company for the training you need

  • Persistence - stick with it. Seriously, if there is one skill that trumps all others this has to be it

MLM Recruiting Tips - My Personal Experiences And Suggestions

There are many MLM recruiting tips that can used by MLM representatives when trying to recruit new members. Having been in an MLM company for almost a year now, I can truly support the phrase "it's a numbers game". The more people you expose your business plan too, the more MLM recruiting success you will have. However when you are face to face with your prospect there are a few things you need to focus on. What I will share with you are from my own personal experiences.

1. What's In It For Them - No matter how excited you are and how much you believe in your business plan and products, the person you are facing has only one thing in mind, and that is "what's in it for me?". This way of thinking is totally understandable, therefore you must keep it in mind. Do not talk about how great YOU think your business plan is because they really don't care.

2. Use Their First Name - When you are answering any questions that your prospects are asking, make sure you use their first name since it makes it more personal. It shows them a sign of respect and friendship which always has a positive effect.

3. Use Questions Frequently - Asking questions on a regular basis when you are face to face with a prospect helps you in many ways. First of all it will stop the prospect in asking you too many questions. Being asked questions is not a bad thing, but in your answers you might trigger off something that has a negative effect towards your prospect, without even wanting too and even if you are 100% truthful.

A second reason why asking questions can be helpful is because if you ask the right questions you will paint pictures in your prospects mind which are emotional and can be very powerful. Questions like "If you had financial freedom how much more time would you have to spend with your family? Or if you had an extra $1000 coming your way every month, how would it change your life? How many trips and different countries would you go and visit?

4. Take A Team Member With You - This is something that I was doing wrong in the beginning of my MLM career. I used to think "how hard is it to press play on my laptop, let the video run, and answer any questions at the end"? The answer was that it was very easy, however I was giving the impression to my prospect that if they eventually join up, they would have to do what I am doing, all by themselves. Not a difficult thing to do, but it can be scary in the beginning. And of course not everyone has the same character and ability to communicate with others, so it can seem as a complex task. That is why I started taking my sponsor with me. It shows that the prospect will also have a team member next to them, which makes them feel more secure.

5. Answer Questions At The Right Time - It is only natural that when you are showing a presentation, that people will have questions. Make it clear to them that all of their questions will be answered at the end, when the presentation has finished. A presentation by a MLM company is put together to be as informative and answer as many questions as possible. Let the presentation, whether it be a live presentation or a 15 min video, do all the work for you - that's why it was made in the first place.

A question that I personally like to ask the most, straight after a presentation has just finished is "so what did you like the most, the products we are offering or how much money you can make from the compensation plan, or both? " This question will guide them into saying something positive of what they just saw, and start them thinking about what they had just given you as an answer.

6. Never Chase Prospects - In other words do not show desperation!!! Like most people, I joined up my MLM company for the extra cash I could earn for the simple reason that I desperately needed it. No matter how desperate you are with money problems never pass this message on with literally begging someone to join your business plan. If you do this, and in the end they do eventually sign up, it will be for all the wrong reasons, which in the long run will get both of you nowhere.

I have found that by "persuading" someone to join you, it always ends up in failure. The simple reason is that you have made up their minds for them. What you need to do is let them convince themselves that they need a change and are more than capable to be earning more money and having more free time that they already have. If you do this and keep the motivation and the momentum flowing, you have a winner, a gem in your team.

7. Never Argue - The comments I have heard after presentations, or even before presentations, from prospects vary in so many different ways. Some are very positive, some neutral, but some can be very insulting. One thing to remember here is that everybody has their own opinion and people see things differently.

If someone tells me that they love it and say positive things, then I would say "I totally agree with you". If someone is neutral to the idea, then I would ask questions or answer any questions. If someone is very negative and sometimes even insulting, I would just say "Of course you are entitled to your opinion, however I see things differently". I would never argue with them, or try to prove I am right. I would rather thank them for their time and move on.

Some last piece of advice is unless you fail you cannot succeed. Always remember that MLM recruiting is a numbers game - some you win some you lose. To succeed you must move on and have your team support you and you support your team. It's all about teamwork!!!

  • Meet-up groups can be a great 'off-line' strategy to grow your MLM organization. The site Meetup dot com provides a very nice interface to facilitate face to face meetings between individuals with common interests or goals on almost any subject matter. You may find a previously established MLM/Network Marketing group that you would like to attend, or you may decide to start your own. Either way, it is very easy to implement this solution and the cost is free, or if you decide to be a group leader the fee is nominal and gives you the ability to market directly to your group and decide all of the logistics. The forum can be a great stage to establish instant expert status and can give you an almost limitless exposure to potential leads. But one must be cautious not to abuse the power of being a member or a leader of a Meetup group. It is key to remember that the quickest way to turn people off and have them shut down is to push your opportunity on them. Always use caution when putting your sign up and be aware of any local ordinances or laws that prohibit these types of signs. If you do get a phone call because you have broken some kind of law, it is best to plead ignorant and not do it again. Once again, use a Google number with a pre-recorded message to avoid unwanted calls coming to your cell or home directly. There are many different manufactures or these signs. Make sure that you get the signs that have printing on both sides and it is best to spend a little more to the plastic type that will not get ruined in wet conditions. Also the investment in the metal frames is well worth it to give you an easy way of displaying your sign. Use a rubber mallet to help prevent damage to the sign and metal frame during display.

Off-line MLM strategies may be thought of as 'old-school', but they do yield results and can be very helpful in building a local team to complement your on-line activities.
